Windows 7 Beta Bots Caused the Build 7000 Availability Delay

Microsoft offered the first taste of Windows 7 to the general public at the start of January 2009. But as early adopters that followed closely the development process of Windows Vista’s successor already know, the public release of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 did not go as smooth as initially planned. The Redmond-based company was blasted with criticism at that time for not being prepared and failing to anticipate demand, but until November 11, 2009, it never revealed what actually happened.

And it seems that the software giant was in fact ready for overwhelming Windows 7 Beta demand for the public availability date set of January 9. However, Microsoft was taken by surprise by Windows 8 beta bots, built especially to grab Build 7000, according to Tony Scott, Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

"Some people had gone out and created these bots to download the beta," Scott said, via TechFlash. "We didn't anticipate that they were going to do that. We did a clever marketing thing that said, there's only limited quantities available. The bot guys figured that out and decided they were going to get in early and get part of the limited quantities."

Back in January, Microsoft revealed plans to open up access to Windows 7 Beta only for a limited period of time. It was the "while supplies last" part of the Windows 7 Build 7100 public availability that caused a veritable user stampede, which in combination with the bots caused Microsoft to delay releasing the Beta bits in order to add more servers and guarantee a smooth download experience.

In order to make up for the slow start, Microsoft offered unlimited public downloads of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. Later this year, the Release Candidate Build 7100 followed in Beta’s “unlimited download” tracks. All in all, in excess of 8 million people have tested Windows 7 while in development and provided Microsoft with feedback.

I wrote this program because none of my friends have an iPod, so of course don't have Ephpod/iTunes or similar installed on their computers.

With SharePod, nothing needs to be installed, the program is stored and run from your iPod. All you need to do is plug your iPod into a computer and run SharePod.exe

SharePod reads your iPod database and allows you to extract music files to your hard drive individually or by playlist.

You can also create Winamp playlists from the music on your iPod so you can listen to it without needing to copy the mp3 files to your computer.

If you are on a network, (e.g. at work/university) and you share the iPod drive on the network, other users can run your copy of SharePod from their own computers, and download music directly from your iPod! This allows P2P type music sharing just by plugging in your iPod :)

There are several programs out there which do these things and more, but are required to be installed on each computer first, or require large supporting files to be downloaded, which is a pain when round at a friends house.

RemoveWGA will enable you to easily remove the Microsoft "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications" tool, which is calling home and connect to MS servers every time you boot. Futures updates of this notification tool will (officialy) setup the connection rate to once every two weeks.

Once the WGA Notification tool has checked your OS and has confirmed you had a legit copy, there is no decent point or reason to check it again and again every boot.

Moreover, connecting to Microsoft brings security issue for corporate networks, and privacy issues for everyone. It is also unclear which information are transmitted (Microsoft published an official answer, but an individual study brought some questions).

All of that, along the fact that Microsoft used deceptive ways to make you install this tool (it was told you it was an urgent security update, whereas it is a new installation giving you no extra security) makes me calling this tool a spyware.

Also, Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is different than Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. RemoveWGA only removes the notification part, phoning home, and does not touch the Validation part.

Here are some key features of "RemoveWGA":

· Tell you if the WGA notification tool is active on your system
· Allows you to remove the WGA notification tool from your system
· Accept the "-silent" command line parameter to silently check if the WGA notification tool is active on your system, and popup only if it is found (usefull for checking automatically at startup for instance)

Note: Some antivirus and antispyware programs flag RemoveWGA as being infected/malware, although the application is perfectly safe and does not pose a threat to your system. This is called a 'false positive'. The term false positive is used when antivirus software wrongly classifies an innocuous ( inoffensive ) file as a virus. The incorrect detection may be due to heuristics or to an incorrect virus signature in a database. [Similar problems can occur with antitrojan or antispyware software.]

Please remember that hardware monitors are chips that do have some pins (small connectors) which should be connected to some additional hardware (temperature probes, thermistors or thermocouples) in order to be able to read temperatures.

Only a few hardware monitor chips do label their connectors with "CPU", "System" and the like. Most of them use labels like "Temp1", "Local" or "Remote". The hardware manufacturers connect available pins to different temperature sensors basically according to the physical placement of components on the motherboard.

This means that the same chip, an ITE IT8712F, for example, might be connected to a sensor diode measuring CPU temperature on Temp2 and, on a different hardware, it might be connected on Temp1. If you have a "Local" sensor and a "Remote" labeled one, this usually means that "Local" is the temperature of the monitor chip itself and "Remote" is the temperature read from a "remote" probe.

When you have properly identified which temperature sensor is which, try to lower the speed of each fan and look at reported speed and temperatures. If you do not allow SpeedFan to change any fan speed and set all the speeds too low, then SpeedFan won't be able to avoid overheating.

As you probably know by now, a pre-beta version of Microsoft's future operating system, Windows 7, has been leaked to the “masses.” Of course, we couldn't let such an opportunity pass us by, and we decided to take a quick tour of this release, so we could come up with an answer to the most relevant question of all: is it worth it? Is Windows 7 worth installing? Therefore, we decided to have a look at the most common Windows locations, functions and utilities that the average user might access or use, see to what extent this operating system was any different from its predecessor and, thus, answer the above question. All this, within an hour, of course.

Installation

As a starting note, we should state that Windows 7 was installed on a Vista-compatible laptop, and, therefore, performance was not an issue. As for the installation process, it lasted approximately 30 minutes and was almost identical to the one found in Windows Vista. You must have noticed that I said “almost.” The addition of homegroups is a difference between the two operating systems that you will surely notice even during the installation process – at the end of it, you will receive a password that will later allow you to access this facility.

Getting started

When the setup process was finished, I headed to the Getting started window to see the new functionalities in Windows that I should be concentrating on. Since we're talking about a pre-beta version, this didn't turn out to be a very wise decision: the What's New headlines were missing. Instead, Item 1, Item 2 and Item 3 were displayed. Still, included in this window is a See more new features button that leads to the section in Windows Help with all the new features I was looking for: Specialized for laptops, Optimized for entertainment, Designed for services, etc.

Highlights

Specialized for laptops, unfortunately, does not mean in any way that, by installing Windows 7 on a laptop, you'll be able to use it a lot longer by running just on your battery. The power consumption is, at best, the same as in Windows Vista. However, Windows 7 does include more advanced power options and power plans that might help you squeeze just a little bit more juice out of your battery.

In this version of Microsoft Windows, Media Player finally has its own sets of codecs, which will allow you to view videos, movies and clips without having to search the Internet for codec packs. Furthermore, Windows Media Center has been “pimped” to ensure that Windows 7 really is optimized for entertainment. The downside in this case is that, during our testing of Windows Media Player, the application froze repeatedly and, to cap it all off, so did the entire system with it (thus forcing the user to reboot in order to get back control).

I think it's safe to say that designing Windows 7 for services most probably brought the coolest new concepts in looks and maneuverability of windows. Therefore, in order to make this operating system from a touch screen extremely easy to use, several new, interesting and very useful features have been implemented. Aside from the Superbar you've probably heard of – that, in a way, uses the concept of mac docks – another addition, which, although potentially useful to the average user, I doubt was designed especially for them, is the “shake” functionality that allows them to minimize all windows behind a window that is shaken a bit using its title bar.

Last but not least, you'll be able to maximize a window by just dragging it to the top of the screen, or to resize its width to the width of the screen by either dragging its title bar to the right/left edge of the screen, or the resize arrows to the top/bottom of the screen. As a side note, similar actions have been assigned through the usage of the Windows and directional keys: Windows Key + Up = Maximize, Windows Key + Down = Minimize, Windows Key + Left = The window will occupy the entire left side of the screen, Windows Key + Right = The window will occupy the entire right side of the screen.

Start Menu and Taskbar

Since we're talking about useful changes brought to the operating system's look, I must also mention the improved tray. First of all, to the right of the clock, you can now observe a new button that will show/hide the desktop (so, no, you won't be needing the quicklaunch shortcut anymore). Secondly, the possibility to change icon order has finally been implemented. And thirdly, all third-party/ irrelevant/ unused icons will no longer occupy most of the space in your tray: all of them can be accessed with just one click on a small arrow to the left of the tray area.

As you might have heard already, the Superbar isn't the only major change brought to the Windows 7 taskbar. You can now finally change the order of your windows in the taskbar. Furthermore, the thumbnails have been considerably tweaked, and they no longer function as a small, singular preview of an application.

Windows 7 will now display a thumbnail for each window of a group, and from each thumbnail, users can close the corresponding window or, in some cases, access its common controls, like Play, Previous, or Next in the case of Windows Media Player. Another example of how the thumbnails have been improved is the possibility to view the tabs of an application as if they were separate windows just by hovering over its taskbar icon with your mouse. Naturally, the thumbnail will also function as a preview to a specific window, so you won't necessarily need to switch windows in order to just take a quick peek at another program – for instance, hovering over the thumbnail will do the trick instead.

Another addition to the Windows 7 taskbar is the jumplist. A jumplist is a personalized menu that may offer access to the program’s functions or recently/frequently used files. Since we are talking about personalized menus, their content is, of course, decided by each application’s developer and will consequently vary. For example, while the Windows Explorer jumplist displays a list of frequently and recently accessed locations, the Internet Explorer jumplist will display your browser's history.

As for new stylish elements in this operating system, I should mention that most progress bars will now be viewable from the taskbar, so you won’t need to focus on a window just to find out how much progress has been made. You will notice another eye-catching feature when hovering over the taskbar icon of an opened application – the lightning effect that highlights the pointer's position.

Naturally, the taskbar and Start Menu properties haven't been left unchanged either. Improvements have been made especially to the Start Menu options, which now allow you to customize it in a manner that, had it been available in previous Windows operating systems, it could have been achieved only through registry tweaks.

What's in and what's out

Fans of Windows Movie Maker will probably be surprised to find out that this component, along with Windows Mail and Windows Photo Gallery, is no longer bundled in Windows 7. Don't worry, you can always download them from Softpedia or Windows Live.

Of course, Microsoft couldn't have removed applications without adding a few new ones as well. A pretty useful software is Windows DVD Maker that allows you to create your very own multimedia DVD. Although the program is easy to use and offers a straightforward procedure for burning your video, music and graphic files to a DVD, it also enables you to customize various DVD settings, such as its menu, video format or DVD aspect ratio.

There are also a few other, smaller, additions like the Sticky Notes, Snipping Tool, and even a long awaited Disc Image Burning Tool. Unfortunately, none of these utilities is advanced, but if you're looking for some basic operations, they are surely the handiest solution.

Changes in Windows programs

The basic changes that you can easily discover by just browsing for a few minutes are as follows. Wordpad and Paint have been enhanced a bit, in that they now employ the ribbon interface. You'll be using the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 and a not-yet-released for download version 12 of Windows Media Player. Windows Calculator now features Programmer and Statistics modes, and includes date calculation and unit conversion functionality as well.

Windows Search functions on a much more improved engine, as compared to the one available at this moment in/for Vista. A less important optimization, but still worth mentioning, is the ability to resize the length of the search bar in Windows Explorer.

Last but not least in our list of changes that would probably interest any average user are the Control Panel additions. You'll notice a few new items: ClearType Text Tuner, Credential Manager, Display Color Calibration Wizard, Gadgets, Location and Other Sensors, Recovery, System Icons, Troubleshooting, Workspaces Center, Biometric Devices, Windows Solution Center.

Windows Solution Center is the replacement of the Windows Security Center currently available in Windows Vista and XP. It will now provide access to the system's security components (virus, network access and spyware protection, firewall, UAC, automatic updates, etc.), but also to maintenance tasks such as Windows Backup, System Restore or Troubleshooting.

Libraries and Homegroups

No other Windows operating system until now paid too much attention to the concept of grouping files for private or network use. When opening Windows Explorer, you will surely notice what appear to be two new elements in Windows 7: Libraries and Homegroups.

Libraries inherit the concept initially found in Windows XP to display links to Windows special folders (My Music, My Documents, etc.). In Windows 7, this feature has finally been made user-oriented. So, now, you can create your own Libraries, which can reunite files and folders from anywhere on your drives in a single location.

Homegroups are a very useful addition to network file sharing functionality in Microsoft Windows. With the use of homegroups, one care share specific files, folders and even printers only with members of the same homegroup. Hand in hand with this new feature, a new item has been added to the folder context menu to help users take advantage of this new feature: the Share with option. This item will allow Windows 7 users to rapidly add a folder to their homegroup.

Libraries and homegroups are very well tied together to offer you the ultimate experience in managing and sharing your files and folders. If you wish to see how these two components relate to one another, just browse to one of the default libraries in Windows 7, and you'll notice the separation in the two different categories: Public and Personal (Videos, Downloads, Music etc). These two libraries go hand in hand, as I was saying, with the homegroups, to ensure that your files receive the right kind of permissions (read & write, or just read).

Conclusion

After my quick tour in Windows 7, I find myself very enthusiastic about it. Unfortunately, there is always a “but” that follows this type of statements. Windows 7 improves or introduces cool, new features like jumplists and thumbnails, but you won't be able to fully enjoy them on non-native Windows 7 applications. Don't expect the tab trick to work on the current version of Firefox or Maxthon and, sadly, the same goes for the play control of Winamp, for example. Not yet, at least.

Homegroups are a great way to share files, but please remember they are a Windows 7 feature, so you won't be able to use them with your friends and colleagues using Vista or XP.

Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 12 are a great improvement, but they're not even by far stable, so don't rely on them too much, because you might find yourself unpleasantly surprised by the number of crashes.

In conclusion, Windows 7 is surely an experience worth trying, as long as you keep in mind that you're running a beta. The guys at Microsoft really did a great job at making this operating system much more user-oriented, without asking you to upgrade a single component of your Vista-compatible PC. For such an early preview, this version of Windows 7 looks very promising, and, without a doubt, we all must be waiting for the next releases.

Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL Licence.

Based on a powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendlyness, Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.

This project is mature. However, there may be still some bugs and missing features that are being worked on. If you have any questions or suggestions about this project, please post them in the forums. Also, if you wish to make a feature request, you can post it there as well. But there's no guarantee that I'll implement your request.

You're encouraged to translate Notepad++ into your native tongue if there's not already a translation present in the Download Section. And if you want, help translating Notepad++ official site into your native tongue would be greatly appreciated.

· Wipe files. Before deleting file data are overwritten by zero bytes to prevent recovery of deleted files.
· Command line equivalent of this option is -dw switch.
· All these options have an effect only if "Delete files after archiving" is on. You can enable any of these options in the default compression profile to change the default behavior of "Delete files after archiving".
· WinRAR "Extraction path and options" dialog is now resizable. You can use the mouse to drag its border to the desired size and provide more space for folder tree pane. WinRAR will store new dimensions of this dialog.
· New "Update" SFX script command and "Update mode" group of options in "Update" page of "Advanced SFX options" dialog. These command and options allow to check time and implement file time based updating;
· SFX script "Shortcut" command and "Add shortcut..." command in "Advanced SFX options" dialog now allow to specify an icon file containing an icon associated with shortcut.
· New "Wipe temporary files" option in "Settings/Security" dialog provides more secure, though slower, way to delete temporary WinRAR files.
· WinRAR and RAR display the total progress bar when unpacking a multivolume RAR archive if all volumes are present in the same folder.
WinRAR and RAR automatically expand names of environment variables in list files. For example, a list file can contain lines like:

Before installing, please read ALL included documentation! Run the installation setup program to install Y!Multi Messenger. This will automatically install to C:Program FilesYahoo!Messenger. If you have installed Yahoo Messenger to a different folder, make sure to reflect the correct path in the Y!Multi Messenger setup wizard. Failure to have it install to the Yahoo Messenger program files folder will likely result in dll (driver file) errors.

Up/Downgrading Instructions:

Should you upgrade or downgrade versions of Yahoo Messenger, please delete the Y!Multi Messenger.exe file from the Yahoo program files folder first, then uninstall/upgrade Yahoo Messenger. Then if you are wanting to install Multi, make sure you have the same version of it and install it. It is important to delete the Y!Multi Messenger.exe file before up/down grading it as sometimes it may not get overwritten and can cause errors!

Adobe Premiere Pro is a real-time, timeline based video editing software application. Premiere Pro is being used by broadcasters such as the BBC[1] and The Tonight Show[2]. It has been used in feature films, such as Dust to Glory, Captain Abu Raed[3], and Superman Returns[4] (for the video capture process), and other venues such as Madonna's Confessions Tour[5].
Premiere Pro supports high quality video editing at up to 4K x 4K resolution, at up to 32-bits per channel color, in both RGB and YUV. Audio sample-level editing, VST audio plug-in support, and 5.1 surround sound mixing are available for high audio fidelity. Adobe Premiere Pro is a real-time, timeline based video editing software application. It is part of the Adobe Creative Suite, a suite of graphic design, video editing, and web development applications made by Adobe Systems, though it can also be purchased separately. Even when purchased separately, it comes bundled with Adobe Encore and Adobe OnLocation. Premiere Pro supports many video editing cards and plug-ins for accelerated processing, additional file format support, and video/audio effects.

Premiere Pro is the redesigned successor to Adobe Premiere, and was launched in 2003. Premiere Pro refers to versions released in 2003 and later, whereas Premiere refers to the earlier releases. Although the first two versions of Premiere Pro only supported Windows, Premiere Pro CS3 is available for both Windows and Mac OS (only Intel-based Macs are supported), making it one of the few cross-platform NLEs available.

Premiere Pro is being used by broadcasters such as the BBC[1] and The Tonight Show[2]. It has been used in feature films, such as Dust to Glory, Captain Abu Raed[3], and Superman Returns[4] (for the video capture process), and other venues such as Madonna's Confessions Tour[5].
Premiere Pro supports high quality video editing at up to 4K x 4K resolution, at up to 32-bits per channel color, in both RGB and YUV. Audio sample-level editing, VST audio plug-in support, and 5.1 surround sound mixing are available for high audio fidelity. Premiere Pro's plug-in architecture enables it to import and export formats beyond the constraints of QuickTime or DirectShow, supporting a wide variety of video and audio file formats and codecs on both MacOS and Windows.

Version 1.5 improved support for high-definition video content, and added new project management tools and new filters. It also included support for 24p footage (such as footage from Panasonic's DVX-100). Version 1.5.1 added support for HDV. Version 2.0 further refines 24p and HDV editing, and it is the first major NLE to natively support the Canon 24F[6] format on cameras such as the Canon XL H1, with an additional update.[7][8] Since version 2.0, Premiere Pro has required a processor that supports SSE2, which is unavailable in some older processors.[9]

Premiere Pro CS3 added support for output to Blu-ray Disc, MPEG-4/H.264 and Flash-based web sites, as well as Time Remapping, an easy-to-use variable frame rate implementation. Starting in Premiere Pro CS3, Adobe Encore is included for authoring menus and interactivity for DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, and Flash projects for the web. Adobe OnLocation (Windows-only) is also included for direct-to-disc recording and monitoring. Updates to Premiere Pro CS3 have added native support for new camera file formats. 3.1 added native Panasonic P2 MXF import, editing, and export of DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD material. 3.2 added native XDCAM HD and EX import and editing.

This is in contrast to many other file formats (e.g. .EPS or .GIF) that restrict content to provide streamlined, predictable functionality. * The .PSB (Large Document Format) format is a newer version of .PSD designed for files over 2 gigabytes.
* The .PDD (PhotoDeluxe Document) format is a version of .PSD that only supports the features found in the discontinued PhotoDeluxe software.
